About

Borders of Art is written by Michael Gregory of Arnold Wiggins & Sons, picture framers specialising in the framing of Old Master, Classic Modern and Contemporary paintings, and works on paper.
From the perspective of the framer, the blog focuses on the presentation and viewing of art. It shares his thoughts on upcoming exhibitions, curatorship, framings and the art market more generally.
Michael Gregory studied carving, gilding and conservation at City & Guilds London Art School and joined Wiggins in 1980, working alongside master carver Jim Wiggins. He travels extensively advising on framing, for both public and private collections, and cataloguing frames. He also lectures and publishes on the history of frames and the techniques, materials and craftsmanship of frame making.
Preferring to work with antique frames, Michael sources appropriate frames for paintings that add historical context and visual understanding to the work. Where a reproduction frame is to be made he designs and makes section drawings from careful observation of the antique.
Michael Gregory is the Grantee of the Royal Warrant as Picture Frame Maker to Her Majesty the Queen and held the same title to Her Majesty the Queen Mother, until 2002. He has also has served as a trustee of QUEST, the Queen Elisabeth Scholarship Trust.
